The Wodehouse Society: A Celebration of Wit and Wisdom

The Remsenburg Historical Marker

TWS founder Bill Blood first proposed placing a marker in Remsenburg, where both Plum and Ethel are buried, in 1984, but it wasn’t until 2011 that members Bob Rains and Andrea Jacobsen took on the task and carried it off brilliantly. That year they did the necessary research and estimated that erecting a marker would cost up to $5,000. TWS’s Board agreed to pay $500 towards this, and a fundraising campaign resulted in numerous generous contributions. Less than a year later, on April 22, 2012, more than 80 people from the U.S., England, Canada, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Japan assembled for a service at the chapel. This was followed by the marker’s unveiling and dedication, also attended by several local folks who had known the Wodehouses. The day proved very wet but was enjoyed by all who attended. For a full report of the occasion, see the Plum Lines, Summer 2012.
