A funny thing happened on our way to the 21st convention, which should have taken place (appropriately) in 2021. The Covid pandemic forced the decision to postpone the convention to 2022. Thus did our biennial binge move to even-numbered years, while The P G Wodehouse Society (UK) shifted their biennial formal dinner in London to odd-numbered years. This delay gave the newly minted Convention Committee, chaired by Elliott Milstein, more time to create a humdinger of a convention at the historic U.S. Grant Hotel in San Diego. Among the highlights: the return of The Wodehouse Society Cricket Club, which played at Balboa Park; a cruise in San Diego Harbor, which included views of not just ships but sea lions basking in the sun; Maria and Dan wowing us with songs, capping the Friday reception; a fantastic lineup of speakers on Saturday; and, that evening, an even more fantastic display of creative costumes to tickle both the eyeball and the funny bone. The Norman Murphy Award was bestowed, fittingly, upon Elliott Milstein. And at Sunday’s brunch, we were treated to a gastronomic talk from Anatole (aka David Ruef)—a laugh-filled finish to a very jolly weekend.
