Our 19th convention, held in the nation’s capital, was, funnily enough, hosted by the Capital! Capital! chapter. There were several treats served up at this binge, starting with the Friday night reception, which featured scenes from a new, Broadway-bound (the authors hoped!) musical adaptation of A Damsel in Distress performed by the show’s creators and some cast members. They were followed by the effervescent Maria and Dan, who never seem to run out of Wodehouse songs to sing—huzzah! On behalf of Sir Edward Cazalet, Tony Ring presented Plum’s final address book as a gift to the society, now included with the presidential regalia. For some, Saturday’s speakers were among the best ever assembled for a convention, and that’s saying something given past great panels. The banquet saw the institution of a new TWS tradition: bestowal of the Norman Murphy Award. There were two recipients in Washington: Norman’s widow, Elin Woodger Murphy, and Plum Lines Editor Gary Hall. The next morning’s brunch was made special by the staged reading of an original skit written by Tony Award–winning playwright Ken Ludwig. When the applause had faded, we all agreed it was a sensational end to another great convention.
