October 15, 2011, would have been Plum’s 130th birthday, so it was only right that the Pickering Motor Company, hosting for the second time, would throw a party to mark the occasion. The chapter pulled out all the stops to ensure the attendees had a wonderful time, arranging a tour through Detroit, guiding folks toward other area highlights such as Greenfield Village, and setting up an indoor cricket match—well, mostly just bowling—when the desired outdoor location was rained out. A highlight of the Saturday talks was the Hands Across the Sea Touring Company, whose members did a reading of TWS’s very first convention skit, originally performed in New York in 1991. But certainly the highlight of the entire weekend was the Saturday night banquet in the hotel’s plush ballroom, with balloons and other decorations marking Plum’s birthday in style. The banquet ended with Maria Jette and Dan Chouinard (who had also performed during the afternoon talks) knocking our socks off with a number of Wodehouse and Kern songs. At the brunch the next morning, the NEWTS performed yet another of their renowned skits, written by Max Pokrivchak. It had been another fabulous weekend, and all was well with the world.
