Our first, and so far only, June convention proved to be another winner. The TWSCC had yet another rousing game of cricket, with the two teams (this time named the Nodders and the Old Florentians) playing as only Wodehouseans know how to play it. (The Old Florentians won by 21 runs.) The Friday evening reception became a much more organized affair in St. Paul with a dinner at which cricket prizes were awarded, followed by a top-class entertainment. Accompanied by Dan Chouinard on piano, professional opera singer Maria Jette sang a medley of PGW songs, ending with “Bill,” which brought the house down. So fantastic were they that Maria and Dan have been brought back to perform at every convention since then, thus establishing a new tradition. The following night, after an excellent day of talks that included a playlet presented by the Chicago Accident Syndicate (“Bertie and Jeeves in Lake Wobegone”), banquet-bound members piled aboard the Betsey Northrup for a dinner cruise down the Mississippi River—another convention first. And to add to the fun, those who stayed on after the Sunday brunch went to the horse races, where more than a few bets were placed. We can’t help but feel that Plum would have approved!
