The Wodehouse Society: A Celebration of Wit and Wisdom

1987: San Francisco, CA

San Francisco, California: August 14–16, 1987
Speakers: Phil Ayers, Daniel Garrison, Alex Hemming, Jan Kaufman, Len Lawson, Doug Stow (for Robert A. Hall)

April 1, 2025
Submitted by: The Wodehouse Society

Our fourth convention set the most precedents for TWS binges. It was the first to be spread out over an entire weekend, first to be held in a hotel rather than on a college campus, first to have an opening reception on Friday and closing (then informal) brunch on Sunday, first to include professionally printed programs (by Doug and Margaret Stow; see sidebar), first to have a full day of talks, and first to be hosted by a society chapter (Blandings Castle, with assistance from a nameless Los Angeles chapter).

This convention also saw a significant increase in the number of speakers, some of whom would make repeat appearances at future conventions. Games were played, and at the Saturday night banquet, prizes for costumes were awarded for the first time. Attendance was growing, too: We were now up to 58 Plummies!

See the full report of this convention in Plum Lines, Volume 8, No. 4 (November 1987)
