Once again the Chicago Accident Syndicate, hosting for the second time, introduced a new twist to our binges: holding the convention in a private club rather than a hotel. The Union League Club provided just the right atmosphere for a bunch of Drones-at-heart (albeit without bread tossing), and the Syndicate pulled out all the stops, providing an architectural tour of the city; an opening night at which members of the City Lit Theatre Company performed staged readings of “The Man Upstairs” and “Ahead of Schedule”; an amazing rummage sale, raffle, and silent auction, all of which raised a large amount of oof for the Convention Fund; another magnificent collection of speakers, which included a staged reading of an original skit, “The Riddle of the Starving Swine,” which employed puppets (another convention first); a glittering, costume-filled banquet that was capped with another marvelous performance from Maria and Dan; and a brunch entertainment that included readings provided by Brits Nina Botting Herbst (who had played Bobbie Wickham in Jeeves & Wooster) and Michael Pointon. All in all, another great success that was no accident!
