Hurricanes down south produced a wet start to our 2024 binge, but that didn’t diminish the sunshine in our souls as we gathered in Nashville. On Friday, members enjoyed outings to the Cheekwood Estate and the Country Music Hall of Fame, followed in the evening by an historic occasion: the dedication of the P. G. Wodehouse Collection at Vanderbilt University. This very special event included speeches and a tour of selected items from the collection, along with an absolutely spiffing reception set up near a display of highlights from Wodehouse’s life and works. The following day we enjoyed another great roster of speakers, and in the evening we reveled in a plethora of clever costumes and the usual dispensing of prizes for same (not to mention those for the brainy coves who distinguished themselves in the quizzes). This year’s winners of the Norman Murphy Award were Noel Merrill and Karen Shotting. At the Sunday morning brunch, the NEWTS again delighted the masses with an original skit, one in which a nudie suit played a key role. All too soon it was over, though many stayed on an extra day or two to enjoy Nashville, sunny at last.
