The Wodehouse Society: A Celebration of Wit and Wisdom

Plaque at the Little Church Around the Corner

It was past TWS president Florence Cunningham who suggested that the society honor P. G. and Ethel Wodehouse with a —famously known as “the little church around the corner”—in New York City. The estimated cost was $1,500. With the church willing and funds donated from Edward Cazalet and TWS members, Frits Menschaar and John Graham worked to arrange the plaque installation and dedication ceremony. So it was that some 20 TWSers and other Wodehouseans gathered for the weekend to enjoy various activities and attend the plaque dedication on Sunday, May 1, 1994, following the church service; Florence Cunningham and then-president Toni Rudersdorf gave speeches. Among those present were PGW’s great-grandson Hal Cazalet, Bolton and Wodehouse and Kern author Lee Davis, former Wodehouse secretary Ann Smith, and Peter Schwed (Plum’s US publisher). For a full report of the occasion, see Plum Lines, Summer 1994.
